Restoration work on the façade of the Holy Trinity Cathedral at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra was completed last month, just in time for the feast of the Uncovering of the Relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh.

The relics of St. Sergius, the founder of the holy monastery, are housed in the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which dates to the 15th century. Work was also done on the St. Nikon Chapel, on the south side of the cathedral.

The restoration was carried out according to methodological recommendations of specialists from the Lavra and the Ministry of Culture, reports the Russian Orthodox Church.

Last year, for the 600th anniversary of the feast of the relics of St. Sergius, emergency work was carried out on oil paintings in the cathedral. During the restoration, sections of iconography from 1635 were carefully revealed from underneath 18th-century oil paintings.

During the dismantling of the icons of the row of Prophets on the iconostasis, a small fragment of an older Annunciation icon was discovered. Under a thick layer of dust and soot, part of the wing of the Archangel Gabriel was found. Experts believe the icon is from the team of St. Andrei Rublev.
