Elderly woman perished in fire at convent in Suzdal

One woman died and another was injured in a fire at a convent in Suzdal early Monday morning.

The fire broke out at the Deposition of the Robe Convent at 1:26 AM, the Ministry of Emergency Situations told reporters.

The convent is one of many monasteries in the famous Golden Ring city, founded in the 10th-11th centuries.

Firefighters quickly arrived to find a fire burning in the trapeza building, where parishioners were living. They managed to rescue three people, including an unconscious woman who suffered carbon monoxide poisoning. Unfortunately, the body of a deceased woman, born in 1940, was found in amidst the flames.

Part of the roof and interior decoration of the building was damaged.
