Sonora, California, September 19, 2023
The men’s Monastery of St. Silouan of Mt. Athos in Sonora, California, under the Western American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, will now function as a convent.
During its session on September 6, the ROCOR Synod of Bishops heard the relevant appeal from His Eminence Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco and decreed:
-
In connection with the repose of its elderly fathers, to change the Monastery of Saint Silouan of Mt Athos in Sonora, CA into a convent dedicated to the memory of Great Martyr Catherine, appointing Nun Catherine to be its mother superior.
-
To approve the convent regulations and development plans proposed by Nun Catherine.
Mother Catherine was formally a sister of the Convent of St. Mary Magdalene on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, part of the ROCOR Ecclesiastical Mission in the Holy Land.
The Monastery of St. Silouan was consecrated in September 2015. Fr. Maximos (Rossi) reposed in the Lord last September, and the Deputy Abbot Fr. Ignatius reposed in December.
