Only seven people live in the Tatarstan village of Arkhangelsk Klyari today. But yesterday, it was filled with visitors and former residents who came to see the restored church.

The Archangel Michael Church, built in 1757, is one of the oldest surviving wooden churches in the entire Tatarstan Republic. It hadn’t been repaired for 100 years, but now the church has been restored to its former glory, reports inkazan.ru.

In Soviet times, the church was used as a granary. The decision to restore the 18th-century church was made in 2017, and work began in 2019. After a series of scandals with failed restoration, local masters took up the job and managed to restore all the interior and exterior elements of the décor.

According to the head of the reconstruction team, the church has been restored to its historical appearance. Villagers had preserved some of the old icons, though it’s not clear whether they can be restored.

The locals believe the restoration of the church will also mark the beginning of the revival of the village.
