The period of the Nativity Fast is traditionally a time for increased philanthropy and good deeds. In this vein, more than 1,000 gifts were prepared for the needy in Cluj, Romania, and Kiev.

The Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of Vad, Feleacu, and Cluj has prepared 850 packages of food to distribute to the needy during the Fast.

The first charity event was held at the diocesan center on Tuesday, December 19, when about 400 of the packages were handed out. The rest will be given out in the coming days, reports the Basilica News Agency.

The event was attended by His Grace Bishop Benedict of Bistrița, vicar of the Archdiocese of Vad, who spoke about the humble manner in which the Lord Jesus Christ came into the world, emphasizing that poverty shouldn’t stop us from doing good.

God impoverished Himself for us and Himself approaches the poor and those in need, the hierarch said.

“When it comes to love, that’s where Heaven is found,” he emphasized. “It’s very important that we approach each other and see each other as God sees us, not according to wealth, social rank, not according to who we are in this world, but according to the love that He shows to each one.”

And in Kiev, the Synodal Department for Social and Humanitarian Affairs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church handed over 500 gifts for children from families of displaced persons, orphans, low-income and large families, and children with disabilities.

Archpriest Sergei Ekshiyan, chairman of the Social Department addressed the children and their parents about the kindness of St. Nicholas, whose feast was being celebrated that day.

“In difficult times, we have the opportunity to become St. Nicholas’s helpers and share the good with the children who have found shelter in the capital because of the war. Let the example of faith and love for your neighbor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker inspire you to do good deeds, and help you and your families in these difficult times,” Fr. Sergei preached.

Pupils of local Sunday Schools also prepared a holiday program for the children, after which they distributed the gifts.
