On December 24, the Sacrament of Baptism was celebrated for 15 local residents at the Church of the Great Martyr Catherine in the village of Nyamata, Tanzania.

The service was celebrated by the dean Fr. Laurent Sakwa and parish priest Fr. Ambrose Chavala, reports the Russian Church’s African Exarchate.

The newly illumined had undergone a year of catechism with Fr. Ambrose.

“The people of Nyamata have had a long spiritual journey. They decided to become Orthodox when they heard the good news about the love of Christ in the Russian Orthodox Church,” Fr. Laurent said.

That same day, 10 local residents were baptized at the Church of St. John the Baptist in the Kenyan village of Kanyada. All the priests of the local deanery were present for the Divine Liturgy and Baptism that day.

Mass Baptisms are a common occurrence in Africa. Last week, OrthoChristian reported on the Baptism of 25 peole in Malawi.
