Help growing Orthodox mission in syncretistic area of Brazil (+ VIDEO)

Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, January 22, 2024

The Greek Orthodox mission in the city of Salvador, Brazil is facing serious challenges.

The mission, served by Fr. Paisios (Andrade), is located in the state of Bahia, which is especially known for its syncretistic mix of Afro-Brazilian traditions and Catholicism and Pentecostalism.

Fr. Paisios is the only Orthodox priest residing in Bahia, and he has a lot of work ahead of him to reach people in such an atmosphere that is not very receptive to the Orthodox faith.

Nevertheless, the community is growing, though it lacks a proper church. Fr. Paisios currently serves in a private apartment, which makes it hard to hold regular services and to accommodate all the Orthodox Christians, catechumens, and inquirers who want to attend.

Therefore, the mission has launched a fundraising campaign with the hope of being able to rent its own worship space in order to hold regular services with a larger congregation and to acquire necessary liturgical utensils.
