On January 18, on the eve of the feast of Theophany, a new missionary monastery of the Korean Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church began in Incheon, South Korea.

The monastery, located on Yeongjongdo island, was set up by His Eminence Archbishop Theophan of Korea and Hierodeacon Nektary, who rented a private home and set up a trailer next to it. A church named for St. Anthony the Great, the father of monasticism, was also established, reports Foma.

The liturgical life of the new monastery began with the Vesperal Divine Liturgy of St. Basil and the great consecration of water on the eve of Theophany. Abp. Theophan notes that there several Orthodox families live on the island, who previously had to spend two hours traveling to Seoul to get to church.

The hierarch explains that the monastery was founded because all the Russian-Church clergy currently serving in South Korea are monastics, including two hieromonks and a hierodeacon.

The Korean Diocese of the Russian Church currently includes three parishes besides the new monastery.

The Patriarchate of Constantinople’s Metropolis of Korea includes nine churches and two monasteries.
