The Russian Orthodox Church’s Synodal Commission for the Canonization of Saints has begun studying documents on the life of the former head of the Ecclesiastical Mission in the Holy Land.

The commission is thus investigating the possibility of canonizing Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin), who joined the Mission in 1865 and headed it until his repose in 1894, His Grace Bishop Pankraty of Troitsk, the head of the Commission, told TASS.

The relevant documents were sent by the Kurgan Diocese of the Russian Church. The work is “at the very initial stage,” Bp. Pankraty noted.

During his long tenure as the head of the Mission, Fr. Antonin significantly expanded its land holdings for the construction of Orthodox churches, which have become historical landmarks.

In 1873, Fr. Antonin acquired the plot on which St. Zacchaeus’ house once stood, and where a church now stands. Last month, the Ecclesiastical Mission celebrated the church’s 150th anniversary.
