The Orthodox Church in America’s Diocese of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania held a diocesan assembly last week, during which it resolved to make a sizable contribution to the struggling Alaska Diocese.

The OCA’s 20th All-American Council held in July 2022 featured presentations about the needs of the dioceses in Mexico and Alaska. Many of the clergy in Alaska get by on rather meager means. In response, the primate, His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of Washington and All America and Canada established a charitable fund and personally committed $10,000 annually for 10 years.

The OCA site lists more than 90 parishes served by less than 50 priests and deacons in Alaska.

And on January 25-26, the Eastern Pennsylvania Diocesan Assembly voted to donate $20,000 to the Alaska Diocese. “This contribution underscores the Diocese’s dedication to supporting fellow communities and dioceses within the broader Orthodox Church,” writes the diocesan press service.

The Assembly, which met under the chairmanship of His Eminence Archbishop Mark, included both clerical and lay delegates.
