This year marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of one of the most beloved saints of the Russian Church, the great 18th-century Holy Hierarch Tikhon of Zadonsk.

The anniversary was festively celebrated in both Voronezh, where he served as bishop, and in Zadonsk, where he retired and where his relics lie in repose, on August 26, which marks the day of his repose in 1783 and the second uncovering of his relics in 1991.

The Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Nativity of the Theotokos Monastery in Zadonsk, where spent the last 14 years of his life, by His Eminence Metropolitan Arseny of Lipetsk and Zadonsk and six other hierarchs and a host of clergy, reports Patriarchia.ru.

Following the Liturgy, his relics were processed around the Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, and a greeting was read out from Patriarch Kirill, who said that “St. Tikhon is a bright personality in Russian Church history of the 18th century. As a zealous bishop of God, a talented spiritual writer and an outstanding preacher, he did much to raise the educational level of pastors and the moral enlightenment of his contemporaries, becoming a true collector of “treasures of spiritual wisdom.”

All those present had the opportunity to venerate his holy relics.

On the same day, the Holy Hierarch was also celebrated in the Annunciation Cathedral in Voronezh. The Liturgy was celebrated by 11 hierarchs and a host of local and visiting clergy.

Prayers for Holy Rus’ were offered during the Liturgy. Following the service, a festive moleben to St. Tikhon was served, followed by a prayer at the reliquary containing a portion of his relics.

The writings of St. Tikhon were immensely popular from their first publication in the 18th century until the first half of the 20th century. This is why in 1905 St. Tikhon the Confessor and Patriarch of Moscow dedicated the first Orthodox monastery in North America to his veneration.

St. Tikhon, bishop of Voronezh and Zadonsk and recluse, was a great Russian spiritual writer. He had to live during the time of the godless “enlightenment” of the eighteenth century, and he saw how the ulcer of unbelief was eating away at people’s hearts and minds. His soul ached for the world, although he had left the world. And his words were directed to the world—which means to all of us.

"So brothers and sisters, let us listen to the holy Gospel, and look at St. Tikhon of Zadonsk and all the saints. I was searching in my heart and wondering if is there any saint we simply recognize for their teaching, because as we listen to the Gospel today, those who teach and do not do shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven, but those who do and teach, the doing before the teaching, and actually the doing is teaching—St. Paul talks about being living epistles—shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven."
