The central Alberta parish of St. Jacob, the Brother of the Lord (Patriarchal Parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church in Canada) celebrated its 120th anniversary last month.

The anniversary was celebrated on August 17 with a Divine Liturgy served by the dean of the Patriarchal Parishes in Alberta and the rector of St. Barbara’s Cathedral in Edmonton Fr. Igor Kisil, local rector Fr. Alexiy Suraev, and other guest clergy, reports the site of the Patriarchal Parishes.

Following the Liturgy, there was a litiya for the founders and benefactors of the holy church and all the parishioners who have fallen asleep in the Lord over the years.

Fr. Alexiy then spoke about the highlights of the church’s history, noting that the parish began when 17 families left the Uniate church to return to Holy Orthodoxy and 42 children were baptized by Fr. Jacob Korchinsky, the first rector, who later became a New Martyr, suffering death for Christ on July 19, 1941, in the Odessa region.

His Grace Bishop Matthew of Sourozh, administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes sent a congratulatory message to the parish that was then read out, noting that the church was consecrated by Patriarch St. Tikhon during his time as Bishop of the Aleutians and North America.

After the service, all the clergy and parishioners were invited to partake of a festive meal in the church hall, during which parishioners shared their favorite memories of the parish.
