Icons depicting eight saints significant to the Orthodox Church were recently added to the bell tower of St. Vasilije “Basil” of Ostrog Serbian Orthodox Church in Chisholm.
Xenia Franck is the artist behind the icons and began studying iconography about 11 years ago.
“Iconography is a specialized type of niche, cultural artwork closely related to many Eastern European immigrants who settled in the area,” she explained.
Images of St. Vasilije “Basil” of Ostrog, the Patron Saint of St. Basil Church, St. Nikolai of Zica, St. Mardarije, the first Bishop of the Serbian Church of America, St. Sebastian of Jackson, California, the first native-born American Orthodox priest, and St. Barnabas of California, along with three immigrant priests from Yugoslavia with ties to Chisholm: St. Theophan, St. Matej (Matthew) and St. Bogolyub, are depicted on the icons painted painted by Xenia now displayed on the bell tower at St. Basil.
