Over 400 Serbian Orthodox faithful filled the Church of Holy Prince Lazar in Birmingham on Wednesday to venerate the wonderworking Hawaiian Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, a spiritual treasure of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) that is currently touring Western Europe.
Despite being a weekday service, the midday gathering drew an extraordinary crowd eager to pray before the revered icon, which was brought to the Serbian parish by agreement of ROCOR Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe and Serbian Orthodox Bishop Dositej of Great Britain, reports the ROCOR Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe.
The icon was accompanied by its guardian, Fr. Nectary Yangson, along with Diocesan Chancellor Fr. Paul Elliott. They were welcomed by the parish rector Fr. Nenad Popović and Fr. Spiridon Bailey from the nearby ROCOR parish of St. Chad in Telford.
The wonderworking icon began its visit to Western Europe on November 1 with a festive procession in Geneva involving hierarchs, clergy, and Orthodox faithful. Following the service in Birmingham, the icon was scheduled to continue its journey to the Russian Orthodox Parish of the Kazan Icon in Cardiff.
