An Orthodox village is being built in eastern Tanzania, with a focus on housing for widowed mothers and their children.

Metropolitan Demetrios of Irinoupolis of the Patriarchate of Alexandria laid the foundation for the village, named after St. Nikitas, during a recent visit to the missionary center in Morogoro, reports Romfea.

Inspired by Mother Teresa’s Christian villages in India and funded by European donors, the project will begin with 12 small houses designed to shelter single-parent families and elderly people who have no one to care for them.

Early Friday morning, December 20, indigenous priests of the region, Orthodox faithful, the mayor of Morogoro, the chief of police, community presidents, school directors, and other officials began arriving at the missionary center to attend the foundation ceremony of the new village.

After the blessing service and the laying of the foundation, the Metropolitan, speaking in Swahili, praised the Patriarchate of Alexandria’s efforts for progress, education, health, and dignified living across the continent.
