The Russian Orthodox Church and the government of Myanmar signed a document on Tuesday, February 18, allowing the Church to operate in the country.

In particular, the agreement was signed between the administration, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture, the Department of Religious Affairs, and the parish of the Russian Church’s Patriarchal Exarchate of Southeast Asia in Myanmar. The Church was represented by His Eminence Metropolitan Sergei of Singapore, the Exarchate reports.

In his address, Met. Sergei expressed gratitude to the country’s leadership and noted that this event is taking place in the 77th year of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The Metropolitan assured the Minister of Religious Affairs and Culture and all those present that the golden domes of the future Orthodox church in the country’s largest city of Yangon will be a visible symbol of mutual understanding between the peoples of Russia and Myanmar.

Late last year, a small plot of land was allocated and the construction of a new church should begin sometime this year. The community currently meets on the territory of the Russian Embassy.
