A new mission in England began its liturgical life over the weekend.

The Mission of St. Edmund in Bury St Edmunds, a market town located 70 miles northeast of London, held its Liturgy on Memorial Saturday. The mission is under the Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.

The mission marks the renewal of missionary labors in the area that were launched in the past but had stalled for several years. “It was a great joy, then, for Orthodox in the historic corner of England to be able to initiate their renewed missionary labours, under the patronal protection of one of the land’s great saints,” the diocese writes.

The mission is named for St. Edmund the Martyr

, King of East Anglia (†869). The service was celebrated by Hieromonk Theodore (Stanway).

The mission will hold monthly services for now.
