Photo: ibtrussia.org The Moscow-based Institute for Bible Translation continues its project to translate and publish the Holy Scriptures in the languages of non-Slavic peoples living in Russia with the publication of the Pentateuch in the Avar language.
The translation has been reviewed by a team of scholars and approved by the Tsadasa Institute of Language, Literature, and Art of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute reports.
Avar (of the Nakh-Dagestan language family) is one of the official languages of Russia’s Republic of Dagestan, spoken by the Avars—the most numerous people in the republic. As of 2020, there were just over a million Avars living in Russia. They also live in eastern Georgia and norther Azerbaijan.
Photo: ibtrussia.org The translation was a joint project between Avar scholars and Biblical scholars with knowledge of the Hebrew text.
The new edition also includes maps, geographical charts, and a glossary of Biblical terms.
Previous Avar publications from the Institute include Proverbs, the New Testament, Genesis, Ruth/Esther/Jonah, 1-2 Samuel/1-2 Kings, and the book of Daniel, all of which are available for download on the Institute’s website.
