A state of emergency has been declared on the Greek island of Chios as hundreds of firefighters battle wildfires that broke out on Sunday.

Thousands of residents have had to flee their homes, and monastic habitations are also in danger.

According to numerous Greek outlets, the Monastery of St. Mark is in harm’s way. “At least 4-5 houses have burned in the settlement of Paphylida, while the Monastery of St. Mark has also been engulfed in flames,” reports the toc.gr.

Messages have also appeared online about the Monastery of Panagia Voithia:

We learned that the Holy Monastery of Panagia Voithia, and the surrounding houses, in Chios, are in danger from a large fire that broke out earlier... We ask for fervent prayer, the abbess has been bedridden for years now... Thank you very much in advance... We kindly ask, whoever sees this message, to share it...

Panagia Voithia was built through the efforts of St. Anthimos of Chios. The monastery is closed to men except on the feast of St. Anthimos on February 15 and on the eight days after Pascha.
