Tanzania: 370+ new converts baptized, including 200+ former Muslims (+VIDEO)

Morogoro, Tanzania, September 23, 2025

On Sunday, September 21, a mass Baptism ceremony took place at the Orthodox missionary center in Morogoro, eastern Tanzania, where 372 local residents were baptized into the Orthodox Church by Bishop Dimitrios of Irinoupolis of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.

According to Romfea, this marks the 21st consecutive year such Baptisms have been held at this time of year at the mission center.

Among the 372 newly baptized individuals, 205 were former Muslims. The candidates had undergone systematic catechesis instruction led by local priests before receiving Baptism and their first Holy Communion.

Since 2004, more than 60,000 people have been baptized through the missionary work of the Metropolis of Irinoupolis in the region.

The baptismal ceremony was followed by an agape feast for all the newly baptized, funded by donations from Styliani Zacharegka of Sohos, Thessaloniki, in memory of her husband Christodoulos Zacharegka and in honor of Tanzanian missionaries Nun Thekla from Thessaloniki and Paraskevi Vamvakidou from Drama.

The Morogoro mission center, where the ceremony took place, had its groundbreaking in December of last year. Earlier this year, several groups of catechumens were baptized in central Tanzania in February, with more than 30 additional baptisms conducted in northern Tanzania in March.

The Orthodox Church has been expanding its missionary activities across East Africa in recent decades, with Tanzania representing one of the most active regions for conversions.
