Accra, Ghana, November 11, 2025
A new Orthodox theological school was officially opened in Ghana this weekend.
The St. Cyril Lucaris School of Orthodox Theology and Culture held its inauguration ceremony following Sunday’s Divine Liturgy at the Holy Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Christ in Accra. The school operates under the Metropolis of Accra of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and has partnered with Greece’s Ionian University through a memorandum of cooperation signed in 2024, the Metropolis reports.
30 students enrolled as the school’s first class and began their studies approximately a month before the official opening. The faculty consists of volunteer professors from Greece, the United States, and multiple African nations who are teaching theology and Orthodox Christian practice to the students.
The inauguration ceremony featured hymn singing by the students, with addresses given by Archimandrite Aedesius Mukeke on behalf of the faculty and student representative Alkiviades Yaw Obeng Adjei. Both speakers discussed the life and theological contributions of St. Cyril Lucaris, the former Patriarch of Alexandria after whom the school is named.
Metropolitan Daniel of Accra presided over the blessing service for the new institution and delivered the keynote address. He conveyed blessings from Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa and thanked the professors for their commitment to theological education in Africa.
The ceremony concluded with Met. Daniel distributing student ID cards to the inaugural class along with Orthodox theological publications for their studies.
The school aims to strengthen theological education and promote Orthodox culture throughout Africa, serving Orthodox communities in Ghana and beyond.
