The Philippine-Vietnamese Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church has delivered aid to victims of Typhoon Yagi in Vietnam, which struck the central part of the country last month. The typhoon, which had already claimed over 100 lives in the Philippines, flooded more than 52,000 homes in Vietnam and led to airport closures and flight cancelations across the region.
With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Pavel of Manila and Hanoi, parishioners of the Orthodox parish of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Nha Trang prepared and distributed over 300 hot meals to affected residents in central Vietnam, reports Global Orthodox.
The parish also provided large quantities of bottled water, warm clothing, life jackets and other essential items to those in need and organized a blood drive for typhoon victims. Vietnamese media covering the aftermath of the disaster noted the social assistance provided by the Philippine-Vietnamese Diocese to those affected by the natural calamity.
Separately, the Thai Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church conducted a charitable initiative in Laos. Staff from the Department of Charity and Social Service delivered humanitarian packages to residents of Nongbua village in Phonhong district of Vientiane province.
With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Sergei of Singapore and Southeast Asia, assistance was directed to students at local schools and their families facing difficult life circumstances. The packages included clothing, footwear, long-lasting food products such as canned fish and instant noodles, and other essential items. More than 80 residents received aid.
On November 20, the Orthodox parish of St. Alexander Nevsky in Vientiane, with support from the Russian House, delivered educational equipment to nine Lao schools where the Russian language is taught.
