U.S. Congresswoman: no aid to Ukraine while they persecute Christians

Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) continues to work to raise awareness of the well documented fact of Ukraine’s campaign of persecution against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

On December 8, she tweeted:

Reports confirm church raids, clergy detentions, and state pressure on certain Christian denominations in Ukraine. Yes, the same Ukraine that Congress keeps writing blank checks to.

If a government is jailing Christians, why are we STILL sending them hundreds of millions with no oversight?

Stop the funding. Demand accountability.

The next day, she tweeted:

So tell me: how is the U.S. not funding the persecution of Christians in Ukraine when we’re literally giving money to the government carrying it out?

Stop sending American tax dollars to Ukraine.

Rep. Luna met last month with a pan-Orthodox delegation of hierarchs, clergy, and laity from America to discuss the ongoing UOC persecution. Predictably, that meeting, and her tweets, were met with accusations of “Kremlin propaganda!” from people like Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC) who are ignorant of Orthodox ecclesiology and unaware of what is happening in Ukraine.

Her tweets come just days after the baseless detention of His Eminence Metropolitan Arseny of Svyatogorsk was extended for another 60 days (he has been held for more than 2.5 years already), and as His Eminence Metropolitan Theodosy of Cherkasy lies in a hospital bed under constant supervision from what doctors believe was a poisoning.

The Society of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco, which organized the meeting in Washington, is holding another pan-Orthodox event, Defending Faith and Freedom on Capitol Hill, on December 16. See the Society website to join.
