More than 100 former members of two non-canonical communities were baptized into the Orthodox Church in Uganda on Tuesday.

Before the Divine Liturgy at the new parish of All Saints Who Shone Forth in the Land of Egypt in Rubaare, Metropolitan Constantine of Cairo and North Africa of the Russian Church’s African Exarchate celebrated the Baptism and Chrismation of 117 people who wanted to leave their former communities to join the Orthodox Church, the Exarchate reports.

The newly illumined had been catechized by Hieromonk Silouan (Brown).

Met. Constantine, Fr. Silouan, and other Exarchate clergy then celebrated the Divine Liturgy. At the end of the service, the hierarch addressed the newly illumined with words of edification.

The Metropolitan also presented decrees establishing the parishes of All Saints Who Shone Forth in the Land of Egypt and St. Symeon the New Theologian, as well as a decree appointing Archpriest Paul Baleijusa as rector of these two parishes.

As a gift to the St. Symeon community, the Russian Church provided a tent for celebrating the divine services.

Mass Baptisms are a common occurrence in Uganda and throughout Africa. On November 30, thirty-two locals were baptized at the St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco Mission Center in Kiboga, Uganda.
