A parish of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) in Cardiff, Wales, has launched a fundraising campaign to purchase a permanent church building, seeking to raise £200,000 (~$270,000) to secure a home for their growing community.

The parish of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, part of ROCOR’s Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe, currently serves scattered congregations stretching from Gloucestershire and Wessex to Pembrokeshire, with missions in Llanelli, Cheltenham, and Wessex.

The parish has identified a church building valued at £195,000. Through a GoFundMe campaign and direct donations to the parish account, they have already raised £70,000. A parishioner informed OrthoChristian that the community now needs to raise an additional £30,000–£50,000 before they can return to the bank for reconsideration of financing.

The Cardiff parish describes itself as a warm and welcoming multi-national and multi-generational community of Orthodox Slavs and British people. Services are celebrated in Church Slavonic, English, and Welsh.

“Wales is an ancient Christian nation, hallowed by the holy men and women of the Age of Saints, exemplified by our great father, St David,” rector Hieromonk Mark (Underwood) writes in the campaign description. “Today, Wales is a land where Orthodoxy is still a rare light, but by supporting us, you will become part of renewing that light.”

The parish emphasizes its connection to Wales’s ancient Christian heritage while seeking to establish a permanent presence for Orthodox Christianity in the region. Its appeal describes the project not simply as acquiring a building, but as “an opportunity to stand with us at the foundation of an enduring legacy: a parish-centre where people of every background can find Christ.”

Those wishing to support the campaign can find more information on the parish’s GoFundMe page.
