Another mass Baptism, including 150+ former Muslims, celebrated in Tanzania

Morogoro, Tanzania, February 9, 2026

A mass Baptism was celebrated on Saturday, February 7, at the Missionary Center of Morogoro in eastern Tanzania, with 182 local residents received into the Orthodox Church.

The Baptisms were celebrated by Metropolitan Dimitrios of Irinoupolis of the Patriarchate of Alexandria. The 182 who were baptized this year included 155 former Muslims, reports Romfea.

Since 2004, more than 60,000 people have been baptized through the missionary work of the Metropolis of Irinoupolis.

The candidates approached the Sacrament after a period of systematic catechesis led by local Protopresbyter Cleopas Bachuba, together with six priests serving in the region. Their Baptism and first Divine Communion were marked by order, reverence, and visible joy among the newly baptized.

Celebrations continued in an African cultural style. A communal agape meal followed for all the newly illumined.

This joyous event is one of several large-scale Baptisms held recently in eastern Tanzania. In September, 370 people were also baptized into the Church, and dozens more were baptized during the Theophany period this year.
