A new book, Death to the World Vol. One: Genesis, complies all material, including zines and memorabilia from the original 1990s run of the Orthodox zine Death to the World.

The volume of about 400 pages includes the 12 original issues published by St. Herman of Alaska Monastery, reflections from the editors, and even a letter from Mr. Rogers.

It also includes issues from related Youth of the Apocalypse outreach publications Alaska the Final Frontier and Mother Wisdom. QR codes will be provided for each Death to the World issue, allowing readers to download and print copies for distribution.

The book is now available for pre-order, with shipping scheduled for Paschaltide 2026.

Death to the World was started by St. Herman’s monks and nuns as evangelism to teens in the punk subculture. A founding member was Justin Marler, who spent seven years in the monastic life shortly after recording Volume One with doom metal band Sleep in 1991.

The first issue of Death to the World was printed in December 1994/ Decorated with ancient icons and lives of martyrs, the first issue was advertised in Maximum RocknRoll and brought letters from around the world.

The zine was distributed at punk shows and underground hangouts, with an estimated 50,000 copies in circulation at one time. The monastics published 12 issues total before ceasing new publications while continuing distribution.

Eight years later, the zine was revived by convert members of St. Barnabas Antiochian Orthodox Church in Costa Mesa, California, including John Valadez, now the priest at St. Timothy’s Antiochian Orthodox Church in Lompoc, California.

A book on the history of Death to the World, Punks to Monks, was also published last year.
