The first Romanian Orthodox cemetery in England is set to open in Leeds, following official approval granted to the community of the St. Macarius the Great Church on February 27.

The initiative was launched the previous year, when a formal request was submitted to local authorities in the presence of local councillors and the constituency’s Member of Parliament. Following an administrative process that included an official application, institutional correspondence, and a deliberative meeting at the Town Hall, the request was approved, reports the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The cemetery will be administered by the local authority under regulations applicable to all cemeteries in the city. Burial fees will be managed exclusively by the municipal administration. Plots can’t be purchased in advance but only at the time of need, with each plot accommodating up to four members of the same family and granted for a period of fifty years, renewable thereafter.

The section allocated to the Romanian community comprises approximately 200 burial plots, situated in an accessible area near the parish church.
