A priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has died from injuries he sustained during a shelling attack nearly a month ago, according to the Information-Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Archpriest Alexei Okushko, 61, reposed in the Lord on Holy Monday, April 6, after spending more than three weeks in a coma following the attack on the village of Prosyanaya in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk Province on March 13.
His funeral was served today at the Church of the Archangel Michael in the village of Voloskoe. Fr. Alexei was buried in the cemetery of the Tikhvin Convent in the same village.
Born on September 28, 1964, in Prosyanaya, Fr. Alexei was ordained as a priest in 1994, following his military service and education. Over the course of his 32-year ministry, he served as rector of the Church of the Prophet Elijah in the village of Katerinivka and as a cleric at various churches within the Dnipropetrovsk Diocese.
For his devoted service to the Church, he was awarded liturgical honors, including the right to wear a decorated cross.
