More than 3.2 million rubles ($42,175) were collected for charitable projects of the Russian Orthodox Church through the Time of Mercy Pascha campaign organized by the Synodal Department for Charity.

The fundraising initiative, which ran from the beginning of Great Lent through the end of Bright Week, attracted participation from over 5,000 people, reports Foma.

“We’re grateful to everyone who made a donation and helped,” said Vasily Rulinsky, press secretary of the Synodal Department for Charity. He noted that the campaign website featured current fundraising appeals for those in need, and thanks to generous donors, three of these appeals reached their full funding goals.

The campaign’s proceeds supported several initiatives: 450 child patients at the N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Center of Oncology received Pascha gifts; 49 generators and food packages were distributed to elderly individuals and people with disabilities living without heat and electricity in the Belgorod Province; 8,400 kulichi were given to patients in hospitals across Moscow and the Moscow Province, with an additional 2,500 distributed to the seriously ill and wounded in the Kursk Province and the Lugansk People’s Republic; and funds were allocated for renovating a charitable canteen at the Church of Sts. Florus and Laurus in Moscow, among other projects.

The Russian Church is one of the largest charitable organizations in Russia, running hundreds of social institutions and initiatives including shelters for women in crisis situations, homeless shelters, programs supporting people with disabilities, nursing sisterhoods, and addiction recovery programs. A 24-hour social assistance hotline receives over 6,000 calls monthly from people seeking various forms of help.
