Another incident of vandalism targeting a Russian Orthodox church in Europe has occurred, this time at the Holy Exaltation of the Cross Cathedral in Geneva, Switzerland. An intruder broke into the cathedral in the night of May 14-15 and shattered a historic stained glass window dating back approximately 160 years.

The incident took place around 11:46 p.m. on May 14, when an individual managed to enter the cathedral grounds after multiple attempts. Once inside, the vandal not only damaged the historic stained glass window but also tried to force his way into the altar area, according to Archpriest Emilian Pochinok, a senior clergyman at the cathedral, reports RBC.

Thanks to surveillance systems and swift action by security personnel and local police, the perpetrator was apprehended at the scene. Fr. Emilian personally arrived at the cathedral during the night, and police compiled an official report. Authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the motives and circumstances behind the attack.

Cathedral officials have raised concerns that the vandal may have been acting under external direction. Surveillance footage shows the intruder appearing to communicate with someone who was giving him instructions on where to go, Fr. Emilian told TASS.

Adding to the disturbing nature of the incident, clergy discovered that one of the cathedral’s icons had been completely smeared with the attacker’s blood.

The Holy Exaltation of the Cross Cathedral is the main cathedral church of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia’s European Diocese and is recognized as a cultural heritage site of national importance in Switzerland. Built between 1863 and 1866 on a hill in Geneva’s prestigious historic Le-Tranchées quarter, it was constructed on land donated by city authorities with the condition that it remain with the Orthodox community as long as a church stands on the site.

The cathedral houses 22 historic stained glass windows in total. Twenty-one of them were created by a local Swiss glassblower during the original construction period in the 1860s and are recognized as cultural heritage of both the Canton of Geneva and Switzerland as a whole. Cathedral officials said they intend to restore the damaged window once the full extent of the damage has been assessed.
