A new book on St. Gabriel (Urgebadze) presents the beloved elder’s life, teachings, and miracles.
Hidden in Humility: St. Gabriel (Urgebadze), Fool-for-Christ and Confessor of Georgia is now available for order from Pokrov Publications, the same publisher that brought you the best-selling Everyday Saints.
As a holy Fool-for-Christ and Confessor of the Orthodox faith, St. Gabriel stands out as one of the most amazing saints of our time. Born in Soviet Georgia, his thirst for truth led him to the Bible and then a radical life in accordance with it. He sought God alone from his very childhood, and hid his spiritual gifts in the humility of foolishness. Now those who turn to him in prayer find a wellspring of miracles.
He was canonized just 17 years after his 1995 repose, and since then has become one of the most beloved saints across the entire Orthodox world.
One of the most famous episodes of his life is when he tore down and set fire to a giant portrait of Lenin hanging on a Georgian government building, because it glorified man rather than God, for which he was severely persecuted by the communist authorities.
And his life was filled with many such trials, but also many joys. He was even deprived of the right to serve and receive Holy Communion for a time, but he was also comforted by visions of God and the saints. He saved thousands of holy icons and Church utensils from the trash and secretly wandered the countryside, serving in dilapidated churches so they wouldn't go without prayer. He spent years living in deep asceticism in cemeteries.
But the greatest miracle of his life was his own conversion to Christ, his acquisition of holiness, and his ability to convert thousands to Christ!
In addition to hundreds of pages of on the life of St. Gabriel, this new publication also includes more than 30 narrations from those whose lives were personally touched by him, and more than 20 miracle stories from those who received healing by his prayers.
