The Romanian Orthodox Church and the Romanian Foreign Ministry have joined forces on a joint humanitarian initiative worth €50,000 ($58,000), targeting Christians living in the Gaza Strip alongside other civilians facing acute hardship.

The program, dubbed the Gaza Christians Aid Package, runs from June through December 2026 and focuses on Gaza City and the surrounding region. It complements a broader Romanian effort to extend relief to Gaza’s civilian population, reports the Basilica News Agency.

Funding comes from the Romanian Patriarchate, acting out of what the Church describes as Christian solidarity and a sense of social responsibility. The money will go toward food, medicines, and basic necessities, with children identified as a priority group.

On the logistical side, Romania’s embassy in Tel Aviv is overseeing coordination on the ground. The embassy brokered a partnership with Samaritan’s Purse, an American nonprofit with established local networks in Gaza capable of rapidly converting cash donations into tangible aid and delivering it safely to those in need.

Organizers expect the initiative to reach around 600 direct beneficiaries across four areas. Roughly 2,400 hot meals are planned for distribution as part of the food component. 200 fully stocked school backpacks will be handed out to children. Medical support will cover chronic-illness medications and hygiene kits for 200 people. The project will also address the critical shortage of clean water by purchasing and distributing ten large water storage tanks.
