More than 2,000 pilgrims took part in a procession with the massive icon of the All-Merciful Savior in Tutayev, Yaroslavl Province, recently.

The procession took place on the right bank of Tutayev and marked the historic return of the Savior Icon from Rostov to Romanov-Borisoglebsk—the city’s former name—which occurred in the 18th century, reports Global Orthodox.

Participants covered a route of about 5 miles accompanied by bell ringing and liturgical chanting. Along the way, the procession stopped at a number of locations including the Mercy social care center, the district hospital, the House of Veterans, the city cemetery, an Orthodox school, and the Sts. Benjamin and Annunciation churches.

The icon of the All-Merciful Savior is regarded as one of the principal sacred objects of the Yaroslavl Province. It belongs to the Pantocrator type, depicting Christ in half-length with an open Gospel in His left hand and His right hand raised in blessing. According to tradition, it was painted in the early 15th century by St. Dionysius of Glusitsa for the Boris and Gleb Church of Romanov-Borisoglebsk.

The icon is notable for its exceptional size—approximately 10.5 feet tall and 9.2 feet wide—and requires at least thirty people to carry. It is currently kept in the Resurrection Cathedral in Tutayev, to which it was solemnly transferred in 1798. The faithful venerate it as wonderworking, with accounts of healings and other answered prayers reported before it.

The tradition of processions with the icon of the All-Merciful Savior spans several centuries. The right-bank procession in Tutayev takes place on the 10th Sunday after Pascha, the feast day of the Resurrection Cathedral. A second annual procession with the same icon is held on the left bank of the city on the eve of the feast of the Prophet Elijah.
