An Orthodox hierarch in Tanzania recently walked through the gates of a prison in one of the country’s poorest regions and came away with an unexpected mission: freeing inmates who qualify for release but simply can’t afford to pay their way out.
Metropolitan Agathonikos of Arusha (Patriarchate of Alexandria) visited the correctional facility in Iringa, central Tanzania, where he distributed care packages of food and hygiene items to prisoners, along with Orthodox spiritual books translated into Swahili for those interested in learning about Jesus Christ and the Orthodox faith, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.
During a meeting with prison administrators, the Metropolitan was told that many inmates eligible for release remain behind bars because they can’t cover small fines or financial penalties imposed on them. Most come from families living in extreme poverty, for whom even 100 to 200 euros is an insurmountable sum. Iringa ranks among the poorest areas of Tanzania, and this lack of funds keeps many from returning home to their families.
Moved by what he learned, Met. Agathonikos announced a new ministry under the Metropolis of Arusha dedicated to finding ways to help these inmates, including possible assistance in paying off the debts that stand between them and release.
The Missionary House of St. Dionysios of Olympus, which backs the missionary work of the Metropolis of Arusha, will support the initiative. Church officials said they plan to approach the effort with respect and discretion, aiming to offer these prisoners hope and a chance at a new start.
