St. John’s Orthodox Academy, a new Orthodox Christian K-12 school, is preparing to open its doors for its first school year in Fletcher, North Carolina.
The academy describes its mission as raising up servant-leaders of character and competence rooted in traditional Orthodox Christianity.
According to the school, every subject is taught through the lens of traditional Orthodox Christianity, including language arts, math, science, physical education, history, and music theory and appreciation. Weekly themes relate to the life of Christ, feast days, and the lives of the saints honored throughout the year. Daily prayer and instruction are led by an experienced Orthodox Christian lead teacher, with both in-person and remote options available.
The school will operate as a multigrade classroom, a model the academy says fosters personalized learning, peer mentorship, social-emotional growth, and academic adaptability, with younger and older students learning both from their teacher and from one another.
The academic foundation is anchored in the Prologue of Ohrid, following the lives of the saints and the liturgical cycle. Curriculum components include the Law of God, a K-12 theological course exclusive to the school; Mystery of History, with a focus on the Byzantine Empire; and Teaching Textbooks for math instruction, paired with one-on-one tutoring, along with additional resources covering English, science, and nature study.
As it prepares for its inaugural year, the academy has launched a fundraising effort to equip its classrooms, stating that 100 percent of funds raised go directly into classrooms and operational security.
Listed funding goals include 20 classroom tablets, Teaching Textbooks licenses, Rosetta Stone School Edition for language instruction, and gardening and science materials.
