Mount Athos will receive a new multi-purpose medical center, funded by the Region of Central Macedonia, following the signing of the relevant decision by regional governor Athina Ahidona.
The clinic will serve the needs of monks and pilgrims and will be funded through the Region of Central Macedonia's ESPA program with 3.4 million euros. It is planned to be housed in a new building constructed at the Vatopedi Monastery, reports Romfea.
Ahidona emphasized that the project represents a legacy undertaking for the Athonite State, one that fills a major gap in health care and medical treatment.
She added that the Region of Central Macedonia has consistently supported Mount Athos through significant projects related to the protection of its architectural, cultural and religious heritage, the protection of the natural environment and the sacred monasteries, and the strengthening and creation of infrastructure that improves the daily life of monks and the experience of pilgrims.
The new building will be fully harmonized with the architectural and natural environment of Mount Athos and will be constructed in accordance with the regulations in force there.
The building will consist of two underground levels, each approximately 4,300 square feet, and one above-ground wing of approximately 1,600 square feet.
The particular characteristics of the site, which require the use of special materials to harmonize the building with the surrounding built environment, have been taken into account.
The plot on which the building will be constructed covers approximately 7,500 square feet.
