Rohia Monastery in northern Romania marked 100 years of monastic life on Monday with a series of liturgical and cultural events.
The celebrations began with a Te Deum service, officiated by His Grace Bishop Timotei of Satu Mare in thanksgiving for the monastery’s century of existence, reports the Basilica News Agency.
The program continued with the symposium “A Century Since the Founding of St. Anne Rohia Monastery (1926–2026),” featuring addresses by bishops, historians, cultural figures, and representatives of central and local authorities. The proceedings highlighted Rohia Monastery’s role as a landmark of spiritual, cultural, and identity-related life in Maramureș and throughout the country.
A memorial service was then held in the monastery cemetery for Fr. Nicolae (Gherman), the monastery’s founder, for Monk Nicolae (Steinhardt), as well as for all abbots, founders, benefactors, and departed members of the monastic community.
In the afternoon, the events continued at nearby Rohița Monastery, where the second session of the symposium took place.
As part of the anniversary program, Rohița Monastery is hosting a painting camp from July 23 to 29, with the participation of established painters and icon painters from Transylvania.

St. Anne Rohia Monastery was founded by Fr. Nicolae (Gherman) and was consecrated on August 15, 1926. The monastery is also known for its connection to Fr. Nicolae (Steinhardt), who lived there for nine years until his death in 1989.
After 1990, the monastic community, led by the late Abbot Justin (Hodea), grew to more than 25 members. The tomb of Archbishop Iustinian (Chira) is also located at Rohia Monastery.
Since 2017, the abbot of the monastery has been Archimandrite Macarie (Motogna).
