Thousands of children in Romania’s Galați and Brăila counties are getting new backpacks stocked with school supplies, courtesy of a charitable program run by the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of Lower Danube.
On August 31, the Archdiocese’s Brăila Deanery distributed 691 backpacks to its parishes as part of the annual Christ in School program, which is providing 3,300 children with fully equipped backpacks for the 2026-2027 school year, worth more than 330,000 lei (about $73,000), the Archdiocese reports.
The backpacks, already packed with school supplies, were purchased in the weeks leading up to the new school year and handed over to the deaneries in both counties for distribution to parishes and, ultimately, to the children. Priests, along with parish volunteers, picked up the supplies and are delivering them to children from low-income families already known to their parishes.
At the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Brăila, 70 children from several parishes in the area received the gifts with excitement, thanking the donors for the support.
In the coming days, other deaneries and parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Lower Danube will hand out equipped backpacks to more children ahead of classes.
The Archdiocese runs the program annually, helping children from families with limited financial means get what they need for the school year.
