Thousands of needy children received fully loaded backpacks from several Orthodox churches in Bucharest yesterday.

The recipients included 3,000 children from needy families and 1,000 from Ukrainian refugee families. The gifts were distributed at the Church of St. Ioan Rusul Brâncuși in the Romanian capital, provided by six parishes in cooperation with the World Vision Romania organization, reports the Basilica News Agency.

The local deanery has been involved in preventing and combating school dropout since its establishment in 2014. It has helped about 8,000 students so far.

The local mayor praised the deanery and Archpriest Costel Burlacu for their efforts to help and unite the community.

World Vision has supported more than 150,000 Ukrainian refugees since February, mostly women and children, including 60,000 in Romania.
