A new Serbian Orthodox mission has taken root in South Carolina’s capital, with the first Divine Liturgy celebrated there on Saturday, September 12.
The Liturgy came together with the blessing of Bishop Irinej of the Serbian Orthodox Church’s Eastern American Diocese and Metropolitan Sevastianos of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta, and with support from the clergy and community of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Parish in Columbia. The goal is to gather Serbian Orthodox faithful in the area into a worshiping community of their own, the Serbian diocese reports.
Fr. Srebrenko Vidaković, rector of St. Simeon the Myrrh-Flowing Church in Charlotte, celebrated the Liturgy for a group of faithful who traveled from Charlotte along with others from Columbia and the surrounding area. Fr. Srebrenko will oversee the mission’s continued development.
The Charlotte parish’s territory already extends into South Carolina, and its clergy had long recognized the need to bring together the faithful living in and around Columbia.
For now, the plan calls for a Divine Liturgy once a month on a Saturday.
