Guardian of Jacob’s Well, Archimandrite Justin, reposes in the Lord

Jerusalem, October 2, 2026

Archimandrite Justin (Mamallos), the long-time guardian of Jacob’s Well Monastery in the Holy Land, reposed in the Lord yesterday following a prolonged illness.

“His life and many years of service were inextricably bound to the complete restoration and enhancement” of the Jacob’s Well Monastery in Samaria, where he also built a church in honor of St. Photini, the woman who spoke with the Lord Jesus Christ at the well, reports the Jerusalem Patriarchate.

The announcement states:

The blessed Father, filled with deep faith and fervent love for Holy Jerusalem, the Mother of the Churches, and the Holy Places, devoted his strength, labours and a great part of his life to the restoration, beautification and preservation of the Holy Monastery, leaving behind a precious legacy and work which will keep alive the memory of his offering.

Fr. Justin labored at the monastery for more than 40 years, during which time he survived dozens of assassination attempts. And it was after the martyrdom of the former abbot, St. Philoumenos (Hasapis), that Fr. Justin moved to the monastery.

The Patriarchate will announce the time and place of his funeral when plans are solidified.

May Fr. Justin’s memory be eternal!
