His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem celebrated a memorial Trisagion on Saturday, October 24, commemorating the victims of the terrorist attack that took place St. George’s Church in al-Karak, Jordan, the day before.
Nine people were murdered and dozens more were injured when unknown assailants opened fire during a funeral at the Orthodox church. “The attack has plunged the Patriarchate of Jerusalem and Jordanian society as a whole into profound mourning, despite the enduring bonds of peaceful coexistence and brotherhood that unite them,” the Patriarchate reports.
“The Patriarchate of Jerusalem, sharing in the sorrow of its suffering flock, beseeches the Lord to grant the souls of the slain a dwelling among the living and to bestow upon their loved ones consolation and strength from on high.”
The names of those slain are:
● Mazen Rasmi Al-Qusus
● Khaled Al-Halsa
● Fadi Al-Halsa
● Assem Barqan
● Alaa Al-Masarweh
● Ihab Nayef Al-Halsa
● Maher Al-Zureiqat
● Marwan Al-Khitan
● Mohammad Al-Qsous
The Patriarchate and Holy Synod also issued a statement of condemnation and condolences:
The Patriarchate condemns this vile, cowardly, and bloody act; which directly struck our community and claimed the lives of martyrs at the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George in Hammoud, Al-Karak, while expressing full confidence in our security services, who possess the professionalism and swiftness required to bring these terrorist criminals to justice.
The Church also calls upon the faithful to increase their prayers at this difficult time, while the King of Jordan has ordered security forces to respond firmly.
