The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church is warning the faithful about heretical and schismatic groups that pose as Orthodox, saying they’re confusing believers and collecting their money.
The Patriarchate of Constantinople’s creation of the so-called “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” in Kiev caused a schism that has affected the entire Orthodox Church, but there are also other, smaller schisms throughout the Orthodox world.
In a statement following its session yesterday, the Romanian Synod says these groups hold services that look like Orthodox worship and use the Church’s titles, vestments, services and icons to do so, reports the Basilica News Agency.
They then ask the people they’ve confused for donations to build houses of worship and fund social and religious activities, the hierarchs warn.
The statement says diocesan centers will take pastoral measures locally to inform the faithful about the danger of taking part in or joining such groups. It also stresses the importance of staying in full communion with the canonical Orthodox Church and keeping the canonical order established by the Holy Fathers.
