Holy Synod of Bishops issues Statement on the Orthodox Church in America's Autocephaly

Syosset, NY, December 2, 2010

The year 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of the granting of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in America by the Russian Orthodox Church, Moscow Patriarchate.

Within the context of this commemoration, the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) has issued a statement, which discusses the original purpose for the formation of an autocephalous Church in America, and expresses the OCA's ultimate desire for a unity of Orthodox Churches on the American continent:

"As envisioned in the Tomos, we believe that the autocephaly given to us will be fully realized when the promise of Orthodox unity in North America is fulfilled, and the OCA together with all the Orthodox faithful in North America become one united Autocephalous Church of America, recognized by all other Orthodox Churches."

The complete text of the statement may be found in PDF format on the OCA website .

Since Metropolitan Jonah lived here in Russia, I think that his love for the Russian Church will be entirely natural and sincere, and this is very important. We always remember that we received autocephaly from the Russian Orthodox Church, and the relationship between our churches for all of us is vital.
