Patriarch Ilia of Georgia: don’t evict people from houses because of the debt

The Catholicos – Patriarch Ilia II of All Georgia asked the country’s commercial banks to not evict from their houses those people, who could not pay their mortgage loans, at least during the winter season, reports The Christian Telegraph in reference to Interfax-Religion.

“I have concerns about those in need, who have taken loans, and banks are now evicting them from their homes. I want to ask the heads of all banks to not do that at least in the winter season,” said Ilia-II during his sermon.

He hopes that “perhaps there are some banks which will forgive a debt or provide some help to these people.”

The eviction of people from their homes because of debts on loans is one of the most acute problems in Georgia. People affected by the mortgage permanently hold protests and ask the authorities to assist them in their relations with banks.

There were several cases of people who found themselves in a critical situation due to their debt on mortgages, and tried to commit suicide because of that.

His Holiness informed his flock that a street in Tbilisi where St. Gabriel’s house is situated would be named after him. At the Holy Trinity Cathedral Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II of All Georgia addressed his flock with a Sunday sermon, singling out the journalists and “the establishment”, asking them to stop spreading death propaganda.
