St. Victor's Chapel damaged by shell fragments in Horlivka

Horlivka, the Donetsk region, February 20, 2015

On February 19 a shell exploded near the Chapel of Holy Martyr Victor in the Park of Heroes (“Geroyev Park”) in the city of Horlivka. The roof, front and windows of the chapel were damaged by shrapnel, reports press service of the Horlivka and Sloviansk Diocese.

The Park of Heroes was opened in Horlivka in 1969. The following year an eternal flame was ignited near the pedestal of the Obelisk of Glory. Memorial plaques with the names of 22 Horlivka residents who were awarded the title of heroes of the Soviet Union are installed near the obelisk. In 1995, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Victory in World War II, a Veterans’ Alley was opened in the Park of Heroes.

An annual military parade on May 9 finishes here, then a memorial service for the repose of fallen soldiers is performed inside the chapel and a grand rally begins.
