Pskov, Russia, May 25, 2018
Archimandrite Tikhon (Sekretarev), the abbot of the seminal Holy Dormition Pskov Caves Monastery in Pechory, Russia filed a petition of resignation addressed to His Eminence Metropolitan Tikhon (Shevkunov) of Pskov and Porkhov, citing “health reasons,” the Pskov Information Agency reports.
The monastery, founded in 1473 and home to numerous saints, was the only monastery in Russia to never close during the long decades of communist persecution. The last of the Pskov Caves elders from Soviet times, Archimandrite Adrian (Kirsanov), reposed on April 28.
“Fr. Tikhon had been very sick for a long time. He has not served recently,” Vladimir Legoida, the Chairman of the Synodal Department for Church and Society and Media explained, as TASS reports.
Met. Tikhon, who was appointed to the Pskov Metropolitanate on May 14 and moved to his diocese on May 21, granted the abbot’s appeal the following day, the monastery reports on its Russian social media page.
Fr. Tikhon was born on January 24, 1955 in the family of a priest in the Moscow region. He has been a member of the Pskov Caves brotherhood since 1976. He was tonsured as a monk on August 23, ordained to the diaconate on August 28, and to the priesthood on September 19. He served as the dean of the monastery for about 10 years, and as a catechist and teacher at the Pskov Theological School. He served as abbot of the monastery for 23 years, beginning August 17, 1995.
