The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus has declared several new patron saints for various branches of the nation’s armed forces, with the Most Holy Theotokos being designated as the overall patron and protectress for all the armed forces, reports vimaorthodoxias.gr.

The Synod met in its second regular session of the year yesterday under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos of Nova Justiniana and All Cyprus.

St. George the Great Martyr was chosen as the patron of the army, except for artillery, for which St. Barbara the Great Martyr was chosen.

St. Nicholas, who is recognized throughout the Church as the patron of sailors, was declared the patron of the Cypriot navy, and the Archangel Michael was chosen as the patron of the air force.

St. Paisios the Athonite was chosen as the patron of military communication units, for which he was also designated by the Church of Greece in November.

Earlier this month, the Church of Greece also designated St. Therapont of Cyprus as the patron saint of physiotherapists, and St. Gregory the Theologian as the patron saint of rheumatologists.
