Hugo Tristam Enelhardt Jr. held a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin and a doctorate in medicine from Tulane University, and was a professor of philosophy at Rice University and at Baylor College of Medicine.
He had served as the editor-in-chief of The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy and Christian Bioethics, and was the author or editor of numerous articles and books, including The Foundations of Christian Bioethics and After God: Morality and Bioethics in a Secular Age. He was also a fellow of the Hastings Center.
Engelhardt was raised in a pious Roman Catholic family but converted to holy Orthodoxy in 1991. According to his conversion story, available at Journey to Orthodoxy, he had sensed something amiss in Catholicism from an early age, but it was his experiences as an adult working with a candidate for the papacy that helped him to realize that Western Christianity as a whole was not that of the early Church.
Having been touched by a Nativity Liturgy in Constantinople, he returned home to Texas and began inquiring about Orthodoxy, with his whole family eventually converting.
